More Than A Beauty Trend: A Closer Look At Pink Moon's Over The Moon Gua Sha Duo

Pink Moon Over The Moon Facial Oil and Guasha Tool
Gua Sha (which translates to 'scrapping away illness' in Chinese) is a healing modality in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that has been recorded since the Ming Dynasty over 4000 years ago, and has been described by Vogue as “the original form of at-home self care”.

Pink Moon’s founder Lin Chen wanted to honor her Chinese heritage and TCM by launching the Rose Quartz Gua Sha tool as a reminder for women to take a few moments of each day for self-care.

More than just a beauty trend for Lin, the growing popularity of gua sha has stirred up a lot of emotions for her. "I've very rarely seen a non-Asian blogger or brand founder discuss the history of gua sha. It is a healing technique that has been widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for thousands of years. It’s excellent for lymphatic drainage and moving stagnant energy in the body. To see it being primarily discussed as 'Eastern botox' hurts a little bit."

On why she made the choice to make it the inaugural product for Pink Moon, "There is a deep ancestral history behind gua sha... it was a way to respect and acknowledge my heritage. This isn't a means of capitalistic gain for me, it’s an authentic dimension of my past. Because of this, it hurts to see gua sha be appropriated and cheapened so much."

When used correctly, the heart-shaped gua sha tool is designed to help reduce puffiness, lift and sculpt facial muscles, boost skin elasticity and make your skincare work more effectively. It can also help relieve sinus pressure and headaches if you massage the tool between your eyebrows.

The creation of Lunar Drops Facial Oil came after, born out of Lin's desire to have a product that was silky, emollient and with “just enough slip” for the tool to glide on the skin without tugging, and to provide a companion product for women new to gua sha. While she has several face oils that she loves, none felt quite right for her daily gua sha practice, and it led her into a deep dive into ingredients.

Lin describes the formulation process of the Facial Oil as research-intense- it needed to be nourishing, friendly for all skin and multi-purpose, along with a uplifting yet soothing and universally appealing scent. As someone with sensitive skin, it was also important for a minimal ingredient list that was cruelty-free, ethically harvested and sourced from trusted suppliers, and organic whenever possible.

She tested the formula among her friends, co-workers, bloggers and an acupuncturist before landing on the final version. Handcrafted in small batches by Lin, it is a beautifully simple formula that consists of a base of non-comedogenic, antioxidant-rich sunflower and moringa oil with a delicate blend of neroli, rose, palmerosa and sandalwood oils. It absorbs beautifully in the skin and leaves your skin with a luminous glow. A true multi-tasker, it can be used as a standalone face oil, hair treatment or cuticle oil.

What's next for Pink Moon? Without divulging too much, you can expect a collaboration with Le Coco, one of Lin's favorite candle companies, some complementary skincare products, a signature fragrance and a nail polish collection. This girl is only just getting started!
