Surviving My First Trimester (And 7 Products That Made My Life Easier)

[Credit: Mom.me]
The truth is that I never gave much thought to pregnancy until I became pregnant, and I was woefully unprepared for the physical, emotional and mental challenges of my first trimester. Looking back from the vantage point of making it to Week 22, the initial months were honestly just a blur of all-day sickness and extreme fatigue (plus tears aplenty).

I'm not sure if I could ever go through it again, but I'm thankful for these products that made my life a little easier and helped me survive this rough period.

1. Frank Skincare Radiant Preg Luxury Face Oil* (S$48.00 / US$35.00 for 1 oz)
My skin is usually very well-behaved, but the surge in pregnancy hormones definitely did a number on my complexion, and my hypersensitivity to smells meant that I had to avoid a lot of the products in my beauty cabinet. I was glad to have the Radiant Preg Luxury Face Oil on hand, which I used day and night in lieu of my regular arsenal of products. Specially formulated for the needs of pregnant women, this lightweight but incredibly nourishing oil combines 7 globally-sourced organic ingredients with a high dosage of Vitamins A, D and E and Omega-6 fatty acids to combat common hormonal skin problems like excess sebum, acne and brown spots.
2. Motherlove Nipple Cream ($10.95 for 1 oz)
I knew that my breasts would grow bigger in preparation for breastfeeding, but nobody warned me about the itchy nipples. There were nights I could not sleep because the itch was bothering me so much I feared I would scratch my nipples raw (TMI, I know!). The Motherlove Nipple Cream is made of all natural and organic ingredients with a balm-to-oil consistency that penetrates quickly into the skin and provides immediate relief from the itch.

3. Sundays Nail Polish ($18.00)

I initially thought I would avoid nail polish altogether during my pregnancy, but sometimes a mama-to-be just wants to feel pretty y'know? I have been obsessed with these made-in-NY, 10-free, vegan and cruelty-free nail polishes since I had a manicure at their salon in Nomad a few weeks ago. The polish has a beautiful finish that lasts me well over a week and ranks as my favorite formula to-date. If you're in NYC, pop by the salon for the full Sundays experience and I promise you'll love it.

4. Aimee Raupp Beauty Organic Belly Butter* ($40.00 for 8 oz / $55.00 for 12 oz)

This decadent Organic Belly Butter not only smells good enough to eat, it will leave your expanding belly (and any area of your body in need of some TLC) smooth and radiant and has become the highlight of my bedtime routine. Formulated by health and wellness expert Aimee Raupp, this hand-crafted product features of a base of organic shea butter and coconut oil whipped to perfection with a blend of essential oils that will leave you feeling calm, relaxed and sexy.

Magnesium deficiency has been linked to nausea, low energy and poor enzymatic function in the body, and studies have shown that increasing magnesium levels can reduce the symptoms of morning sickness. The mist comes in a convenient spray bottle and contains organic magnesium sourced from the Dead Sea in Israel, and while it did not eliminate my sickness, a few pumps on the inside of my wrists and soles of my feet definitely gives me an instant boost of energy- I love having Morning Sickness Spray in my bag when I am out and about running errands!

6. Pink Stork Liquid Prenatal Vitamin ($31.99 for 16 oz)

I must have tried at least 4-5 different brands of pre-natal vitamins but they all made me sick, and I was almost about to give up until my mother-in-law recommended liquid vitamins and I haven't looked back since! This formula is made from organic, whole-food sources and provides all the necessary nutrients to promote healthy fetal development, including folate from lemon peels, B-vitamins, and non-constipating iron, plus it is proven to absorb 98% better than pills and gummies. However I am so resistant to vitamins that this still upsets my tummy if I take it in the morning, so I take this at the end of the night before I go to bed.

One of the hardest things about transitioning into my second trimester was trying to sleep on my side comfortably and I finally caved and ordered a Body Pillow with the softest cotton jersey cover off Amazon. My only regret is not getting it earlier, because this contraption (which does take up almost half of our Queen-sized bed) is literally the most comfortable thing I have ever laid in and stops me from moving as much in my sleep as I usually do. P/S: My husband secretly took a nap in this one day and declared it the best sleep of his life! Father's Day present maybe?
