Is Bottega Organica Worth The Hype
(And Pricetag)?

Bottega Organica
Bottega Organica is an all-natural skincare line helmed by world-renowned geneticist Dr. Andrea Alimonti and chief product formulator Mary Ahern, made with the purest organic ingredients harvested and processed naturally from their farms in Chatham, New York and Liguria, Italy. The La Mer of the green beauty world, the brand is the perfect marriage of plant medicine with innovative science and has become synonymous with luxury and sophistication, with established bloggers like Sarita Coren (of Edible Facial) and Lola Gusman (of Hermes Hippie) singing high praises.

The superstar ingredient found in all their products is prawn sage extract, which draws its namesake from its vibrant red flower that resembles shrimp heads. A hitherto unknown ingredient in the Western world, it was an accidental discovery by Dr. Alimonti when he was doing research on how certain plant extracts can prolong the lifespan of human cells and slow down the aging process. Most of Bottega's products also contains their own production of Ligurian extra virgin olive oil, which contains youth-preserving ingredients like alpha-tocopherols, polyphenols and oleocanthal.
Everything is made fresh (their farm-to-face creams in particular are handmade in small batches of 20!) and intended to last about 3 months after opening. Their look is best described as minimal and unpretentious, and they started transitioning their packaging into miron glass last fall to better protect and preserve the products since they are all made without preservatives.
Bottega has been on my radar for a long time, but it wasn't until I was recently invited to lunch with Lin, their Global Marketing and Sales Director and gifted some products that I was finally able to experience and decide for myself if the brand is truly worth the hype.
Bottega OrganicaRejuvenating Body Scrub ($68.00 for 3.4 oz)
A body scrub may sound like something you can easily whip up in your kitchen, but the Rejuvenating Body Scrub is a sumptuous blend of premium ingredients that has truly elevated my shower routine to a whole new level. The formula contains the perfect ratio of Mediterranean sea salt, organic olive oil, shea butter and beeswax that not only gently and thoroughly exfoliates my skin and also hydrates and nourishes the parched areas, leaving my body beautifully smooth and velvety-soft to the touch. The organic peppermint helps stimulate blood circulation and carrot and apricot provide natural vitamins and antioxidants.
I have never liked any other scrubs I have tried before, but this one gets my vote. It melts like a dream onto my skin and does not leave a mess in my bathtub. The peppermint has an uplifting and invigorating scent and leaves my skin feeling cool and tingly for a long time after I am out of the shower, which is perfect for the hot summer months! This feels like a high-end spa experience, and since you only have to use this once or twice a week for glowing skin, I imagine that this tub will last quite a while and well-worth the price tag.
Ingredients: sea salt, olea europaea (olive) fruit oil **, butyrospermum parkii (shea) butter *, mentha piperita (peppermint) leaf extract *, cera alba (beeswax) *, peppermint (mentha piperita) oil *, salvia haenkei (prawn sage) extract **, salvia officinalis (sage) extract *, daucus carota sativa (carrot) root extract *, prunus armeniaca (apricot) fruit extract *, limonene and linalool
* certified organic herbs flowers and fruits  ** harvested by Bottega Organica

Bottega OrganicaBody Contour Formula ($125.00 for 3.4 fl oz)
Before you balk at the price tag- this is not meant to be an all-over body oil, but rather a targetted treatment for your cellulite-prone areas. The organic chili peppers are loaded with capsaicin molecules, which increases the blood flow and absorption of the other healthful ingredients into your skin. Like the body scrub, this also contains peppermint, carrot and apricot to deliver the same benefits.
Two things to be aware of when you are using this: the formula is a vivid blood orange color and can stain your clothing, and it can also cause a burning sensation if you apply it to (ahem) delicate body parts. Lin advised me to use this product at night, and I would also add to avoid contact with your eyes and wash your hands after using this. I apply a few pumps primarily on my outer thighs where my stretch marks appear, and I can actually see them becoming less pronounced after I massage the product into my skin.
If you are planning to show more skin during the summer, this product will be a game-changer! Pregnant mamas may be interested in their Stretch-Mark Prevention Oil which has a much simplier ingredient list and can be used for your entire body.
Ingredients: olea europaea (olive) fruit oil **, capsicum frutescens (chili pepper) fruit extract *, butyrospermum parkii (shea) butter *, cera alba (beeswax) *, peppermint (mentha piperita) oil *, prunus armeniaca (apricot) fruit extract *, daucus carota sativa (carrot) root extract *, salvia officinalis (sage) leaf extract *, salvia haenkei (prawn sage) extract **, limonene and linalool
* certified organic herbs flowers and fruits  ** harvested by Bottega Organic

Bottega Organica
Bottega Organic definitely blew me away with these two bodycare products, and I plan to purchase a few more products for myself and hope to review some of their skincare items. While their prices are a little steep compared to your average green beauty brand, Sarita has written an eloquent post on what goes behind the creation of the products you use and why it warrants a higher price point.

P/S: Their West Village boutique no longer exists, but I highly recommend checking out their sister restaurant Quartino, where their signature olive oil is the primary ingredient in all their homemade dishes and the ingredients are all locally and sustainably sourced. All of Bottega's products are also available for purchase there!

Have you ever tried Bottega Organic? Which of their products appeals to you the most?
