Lilikoi Living: Skincare for Life's Adventures (And A Giveaway!)

Lilikoi is the Hawaiian word for passion fruit and to me,  the name Lilikoi Living evokes an image of a tropical paradise with luscious flora against a rugged landscape. A relative newcomer to the green beauty scene, the brand has also been featured in Organic Spa Magazine, Refinery 29 and the now-defunct Daily Candy site.
A natural and organic skincare line designed with the woman-on-the-go in mind, every product is made in a USDA organic-certified lab with organic and naturally-derived ingredients in lightweight, quick-to-absorb and hydrating formulas.

Founder June-wei Sum was born in Singapore but now calls Washington D.C. home, a international development specialist by day and skincare entrepreneur by night. The idea for Lilikoi Living came about on her honeymoon in Hawaii, when she discovered that passion fruit (aka lilikoi, also known as 'maracuja') contains exceptionally high levels of lycopene and combats damage from free radicals and UV exposure while improving the cellular function of the skin. Her desire to create a simple but effective skincare routine for an active person on-the-move was sparked, and passionfruit became a central ingredient in all her products.

I am always excited to see a Singaporean face in the green beauty world and immediately reached out to her to say hello, and she generously sent me her products for review. The first thing that I noticed how incredibly portable the products were, which made them the perfect travel companions for my 3-week long vacation home. Little did I know that they would be all my skin could tolerate in the unrelenting heat and humidity in Singapore, which says a lot because I had travelled with an entire army of beauty products!

The Bamboo Buff Exfoliating Facial Wash relies on powdered bamboo and crushed walnuts to act as natural gentle exfoliants to polish and renew your complexionwhile raspberry seed oil helps with skin elasticity and brightening and chamomile soothes and nourishes. (A lot of microbead-laden exfoliating products pose long-term danger to marine line and the environment, and it's definitely worth reading June-wei's article on MindBodyGreen about why you need to switch to a natural alternative.)

I had intended for this to be a morning pick-me-up cleanser, but I ended up using it day and night because it was the only product I had packed that truly felt it was able to remove all the sweat and grime from my face after being out and about in the sun all day. I would first remove my eye makeup with the One Love Organics Skin Savior balm and then proceed to clean the rest of my makeup off with the facial wash, and it left my face feeling soft and squeaky-clean, with an enviable glow the next day.

Ingredients: Aqua (Water), Decyl Glucoside, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice*, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Esters, Glycerin, Bambusa Vulgaris (Bamboo) Stem Powder, Sodium Hyaluronate, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Oil, Rubus Idaeus (Raspberry) Seed Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter*, Passiflora Edulis (Passionflower) Fruit Extract, Juglans Regia (Walnut) Shell Powder, Panthenol, Allantoin, Anthemis Nobilis (Chamomile) Flower Extract*, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract*, Camellia Sinensis (White Tea) Extract*, Xanthan Gum, Algin, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Citrus Paradisi (Grapefruit) Peel Oil, Parfum (100% Natural Essential Oil Blend)

The Hibiscus Passion Active Hydrator was the product I was most excited to try, since it contains hibiscus extract which is both rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory and has the reputation of being nature's Botox. It draws its hydrating properties from hyaluronic acid which holds up to 1000 times its weight and plumps up skin cells, and white tea helps protects against UV rays and fights against free radicals.

I had thought that this product was a water-based toner and was a little surprised when it did not dispense finely like my other products, but I opened the bottle and realised it had the consistency of a lightweight lotion and was more a moisturizer than a mist.

A tip I learnt is to hold the bottle further away from my face and then use my fingers to pat it in. June-wei explained to me that the hydrator was formulated to use on a clean face, like any regular moisturizer, or for times post-gym, on a hike or in an airplane (when you're not thinking about your makeup). But you may not want to spray the product over a full face of makeup as I found that it is visible when it lands on your face.

Ingredients: Aqua (Water), Glycerin, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice*, Cetyl Alcohol, Emulsifying Wax, Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate, Sodium Hyaluronate, Squalane, Linum Usitatissimum (Flax) Seed Oil*, Borago Officinalis (Borage) Seed Oil*, Algin, Allantoin, Panthenol, Xanthan Gum, Citric Acid, Arnica Montana Flower Extract*, Anthemis Nobilis (Chamomile) Flower Extract*, Camellia Sinensis (White Tea) Extract*, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Extract*, Passiflora Edulis (Passionflower) Fruit Extract, Hibiscus Sabdariffa Flower Extract, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract*, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Lavandula Hybrida (Lavender) Oil*, Parfum (100% Essential Oil Blend)

The Ginseng Peptide Priming Serum is a genie in a bottle, because it doubles as both a moisture booster for sun-stressed skin and a make-up primer. The product is a great alternative to my once-beloved Clinique Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief, and it is free of silicones, synthetic fragrances and the other nasties. The magic lies in the peptide complex that stimulates the production of collagen, and the ginseng extract that evens your skintone and energizes your skin like a shot of caffeine.

The formula is weightless and quickly absorbed into the skin, forming an invisible base that acts as the perfect foundation for makeup. I find that 1-2 pumps is enough to cover my face and neck, and I saw a difference from the first application- it smoothed my pores and diffused some of my facial imperfections.

Ingredients: Aqua (Water), Hydroxyethylcellulose, Emuslifying Wax, Glycerin, Sodium Hyaluronate, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice*, Zinc Oxide, Squalane, Lecithin, Cucumis Sativus(Cucumber) Fruit Extract*, Arnica Montana Flower Extract*, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Extract*,Passiflora Incarnata (Passionflower) Fruit Extract, Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5, Panax Ginseng Root Extract, Citric Acid, Anthemis Nobilis (Chamonile) Flower Extract*, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate (Vitamin C), Titanium Dioxide, Mica, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Riboflavin, Cymbopogon flexuosus (Lemongrass) Oil*, Parfum (100% Natural Essential Oil Blend)
