Balm Kitchen Botanical Skin Food

Balm Kitchen Singapore
Armed with two diplomas in Organic Skincare from Formula Botanica and an Associate Lecturer with the school, Teresa Foo is the real deal, and her passion for green beauty and healthy living is evident in her person and her brand.

Her journey to green beauty began when her young son's atopic eczema motivated her to seek a natural remedy to sooth his skin, and what began as a personal project gradually evolved to an affordable line of gentle yet effective products that are plant-based and cruelty-free, hand-crafted in small batches out of her studio. A one-woman show, she does everything from formulation to production to design, photography and packaging, and every batch is a labour of love that takes hour from start to finish.

She graciously invited me to her studio for a chat and a mini-workshop when I was in Singapore, and I was so impressed by her breath and depth of her knowledge. She also gave me a bag of her products to try, and I will be sharing some of my thoughts in this post!
Regular Lip Balm in Earl Grey (S$8.00), French Kiss Tinted Lip Balm (S$9.00), Lip Tint in Pink Passion (S$15.00) and Balancing Body Balm in travel size (S$11.00)
I was gifted the Regular Lip Balm in Earl Grey, which is lightly-scented with a hint of Bergamot oil. Formulated with organic ingredients such as sweet almond oil, coconut oil, and cocoa butter, this rich balm will glide easily over your lips and adequately protect and nourish them to ensure you're always selfie-ready!

The lip balms currently comes in four flavors: Earl Grey, Pink Grapefruit, Green Tea and Very Vanilla, but I know she also has made other yummy flavors like Coffee O'Holic, Dark Choccy and Au Naturel. Since Suntegrity and Coola recently launched their SPF lipsticks and the sun is always so intense in Singapore, I would love to see a little SPF in future formulations.

Ingredients: Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (sweet almond) oil*, Cocos Nucefera (coconut) oil*, Euphorbia Cerifera (candelilla) wax, Theobrama Cacao (cocoa) seed butter*, Mangifera Indica (mango) butter, Persea Gratissima (avocado) oil, Lecithin (non-GMO soy), Tocopherols (vitamin E), Citrus Bergamia (bergamot bergaptene-free) peel oil
* Certified Organic

Next is the French Kiss Tinted Lip Balm in Sassy Coral, which I would describe as a pinkish-red that mimics the natural color of my lips. The tinted version has a similar formula as her flavored balms, except it uses organic sunflower oil instead of sweet almond oil and provides a hint of color on your lips.

Ingredients: Helianthus Annuus (sunflower) seed oil*, Cocos Nucefera (coconut) oil*, Euphorbia Cerifera (candelilla) wax, Theobrama Cacao (cocoa) seed butter*, Mangifera Indica (mango) seed butter, Persea Gratissima (avocado) oil, Lecithin (non-gmo soy)*, Tocopherols (vitamin E), Pelargonium Graveolens (geranium) oil, May contain (+/-): Mica,Titanium dioxide, CI 77491, Iron oxides
* Certified Organic
The Lip Tint in Pink Passion is a hybrid between a lipbalm and a lipgloss and a new addition to the line. It comes in a twist-and-brush applicator which I did not think I would like, but it actually allows a lot more control and precision to applying the product on your lips. I really liked the texture of the tint, and the color is also very buildable- two layers of this over the French Kiss Tinted Lip Balm resulted in a lovely, natural pout that was glossy without being overdone.

The Lip Tint currently only comes in two colors, and I am eagerly waiting for Teresa to come up with a whole range of fun colors for this product!

Ingredients: Helianthus Annuus (sunflower) seed oil*, Cocos Nucefera (coconut) oil*, Euphorbia Cerifera (candelilla) wax, Theobrama Cacao (cocoa) seed butter*, Mangifera Indica (mango) seed butter, Persea Gratissima (avocado) oil, Lecithin (non-gmo soy)*, Tocopherols (vitamin E), Pelargonium Graveolens (geranium) oil, May contain (+/-): Mica,Titanium dioxide, CI 77491, Iron oxide

If you have perpetually parched skin on your legs and feet like me, the Body Balm in Travel Size needs to go into your handbag. The Balm is made from rich plant emollients like organic cocoa butter, mando butter, sweet almond oil, camellia oil, and carries a faint scent of roses that has calming aromatherapy properties. To be honest, I would not have minded a stronger scent, but I know that there are people who like to minimize the use of essential oils in their products.

Teresa explained to me that balms, oils and lotions all help to moisturize the skin, but the balm ranks highest in terms of creating a barrier on your skin to prevent transepidermal water loss (followed by the oil and then the lotion), which makes it great on dry, mature or dehydrated skin. When I asked her about layering my products, she recommended applying a lotion that would absorb faster first, and then sealed with the balm and sunscreen last.

I love the packaging and ease of application for this travel-sized product because it means that I don't have to dip my fingers into a tin. A word of caution: the formula does contain a higher amount of wax in order for the product to have a solid structure, which means it will come off slightly greasy. I was a little overenthusiastic and rolled it all over my legs, but I have since learnt that I just need to use one single thin layer on the skin and massage it until it is fully absorbed

Ingredients: Theobrama Cacao (cocoa) seed butter*, Mangifera Indica (mango) butter, Euphorbia Cerifera (candelilla) wax, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (sweet almond) oil*, Camellia Sinensis (camellia) seed oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (jojoba) seed oil, Ricinus Communis (castor) seed oil*, Tocopherols (vitamin E)
* Certified Organic

Balm Kitchen Workshop

The highlight of my visit to the Balm Kitchen studio was a one-on-one mini-workshop to make my own anti-aging face lotion. Teresa patiently walked me through the steps of creation and explained to me the purpose of every ingredient in the formula, and the result was a beautiful bottle of lightweight face lotion that I used as my day-and-night moisturizer for the rest of my vacation in Asia!
I loved the product so much that I ordered a, unncented bottle for a friend, and Teresa offers her thoughtful customization to all her customers because she believes that every skin profile is unique. You can take a look at the various workshops for lip balms, face oils and other natural beauty products here, and she also conducts corporate workshops at special group rates!
