Wanderlust And The Art Of Organics

Beauty and travel are two of my favorite things in life, so when I found out that Art of Organics was releasing a Wanderlust box for the month of March, you can imagine my excitement.
Art of Organics had been on my radar for a long time, but I was already to committed to two other beauty boxes and did not want to be overwhelmed with products. The only time I had caved was when I bought their makeup-focused Glam Box as a one-time purchase because it had a couple of brands that I had been wanting to try. I was very impressed with the immaculately-wrapped gift box that arrived at my doorstep in no time, as well as the value of its content.

I saw that the cost of subscription was recently lowered to a more affordable price point, and it felt like the universe was affirming my decision when I discovered that the next box was going to be travel-themed. So I took the cue and cancelled one of my boxes and signed up for AO instead.

The one thing that sets AO apart from the other subscription boxes on the market is their thoughtful curation of organic, natural, non-toxic and cruelty-free products that adhere to their strict standards for clean beauty. For $38 a month, you will receive 2-4 products with a combined retail value of over $70, with the promise that every product has been carefully chosen "with the intent of creating a meaningful experience".

In the over-saturated beauty industry, it is certainly helpful when someone takes the guesswork out of figuring out what is safe to use and what works. It should also come as no surprise that founder Claire Molyneaux built her career as a buyer for Anthropologie and merchandiser for a California-based women’s company, and that is reflected throughout AO in her attention to detail and sense of aesthetics. (You can read more about her here.)

Let's have a peek inside March's box:

Suntegrity Natural Moisturizing Face Sunscreen & Primer SPF 30 ($45.00 for 1.7 oz) and
5 in 1 Tinted Moisturizing Sunscreen ($4.95 for deluxe sample)
Sunscreen is my best defense against skin cancer and the hyperpigmentation that I am genetically predisposed to, and I like to double up my sun protection by wearing sunscreen and a foundation / BB cream with SPF in it.
Winner of 2013 Allure Best of Beauty Award and a previous Beauty Heroes selection, the Suntegrity Natural Moisturizing Face Sunscreen & Primer SPF 30 is a top-rated face sunscreen by the EWG / Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database. This sunscreen offers both UVA and UVB protection and the active ingredient is non-nano zinc oxide, which offers an SPF30 value. (You can read an informative piece about SPF value here.) It also doubles as a face moisturizer and makeup primer, thanks to hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, astaxanthin, red algae and aloe vera. It does not contain parabens, phthalates, propylene glycol, mineral oils or titanium dioxide, making it one of the cleanest formula on the market.
I love that this multi-tasker allows me to skip a few steps and shave precious time off my morning routine. This light lotion is white when you first pump it out but it will blend beautifully into your skin and does not leave a tell-tale cast on your face. It also has a lovely citrus scent and it does not feel greasy like some of the other natural sunscreens I have tried.
Ingredients: Aloe Barbadensis (Organic Aloe Vera) Leaf Juice, Capric Caprylic Triglycerides (Coconut Oil Extract), Water (Aqua), Sorbitan Stearate (Plant Derived), Glyceryl Stearate (Plant Derived), Polyglyceryl-4 Isostearate (Plant Derived), Hexyl Laurate (Plant Derived), Simmondsia Chinensis (Organic Jojoba) Seed Oil, Cetyl Dimethicone (Mineral Derived), Magnesium Sulfate (Epsom Salt), Helianthus Annuus (Organic Sunflower) Seed Oil, Cucumis Sativus (Organic Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Astaxanthin (Algae Source), Hyaluronic Acid (Plant Derived), Chlorella Emersonii (Red Algae) Extract, Camellia Sinensis (Organic Green Tea) Extract, Punica Granatum (Organic Pomegranate) Seed Oil, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Essential Oil, Citrus Sinensis (Sweet Orange) Essential Oil, Citrus Reticulata Blanco (Tangerine) Essential Oil, Polyaminopropyl Biguanide, Ethylhexylglycerin
* Unfortunately the Tinted Moisturizer sample I received is in too light of a shade for me, so I will be gifting it to a friend.
Urb Apothecary Lip & Cheek Tint ($12.00 for full-size) and
Lavender Matcha Mask ($5 for deluxe sample)

I had never heard of Urb Apothecary before this box, but I went on their website and saw that their products are extremely well-priced, which is great if you are a green beauty on a budget!
Although I appreciate the eco-friendly packaging, I find the tube a little clumsy to work and would have preferred a twist-tube. The tint is a little sheer on first application, although the color is buildable and you can layer the product for added intensity. The color would show up more on fairer skintones, but I think it works well for a touch-up on the go or if you just want something quick and easy for an errand run. I find it a little sticky on my face and will probably just be using this as a lip balm though!
(On a side note, one of the most under-rated Lip & Cheek product I have ever used is a $6 colorstick from Erzulie Cosmetics on Etsy. She has a gorgeous range of colors and they are all highly-pigmented and stay on all day!)
Ingredients: Grapeseed* and Sunflower Oil* infused with Alkanet Root*, Rose Petals*, Rosehips*; Beeswax*, Cocoa Butter*, Arrowroot Powder*, Kaolin Clay, Geranium*, Palmarosa*, and Ylang Ylang* Essential Oil and Vitamin E (Non-GMO)
The Lavender Matcha mask is as simple as they come, with just four ingredients in the formula. Described as a gentle detoxing and cleansing face mask, it is formulated to brighten dull skin, reduce appearance of pores and fine lines, and improve problem skin with regular use.  While I liked the floral scent of the mask, the sample size only allowed me two uses from which I cannot discern any difference to my skin.
Ingredients: Kaolin Clay, Ground Lavender Flowers*, Matcha Green Tea Powder* and Palmarosa Essential Oil*
One Love Organics Skin Savior Waterless Beauty Balm ($19.00 for travel-size)
I am a big fan of One Love Organics and the very first ever product review I wrote on this blog was about them, so I was thrilled to see this in the box. My friend Yenny had also recently sent me generous samples of Leahlani's Bless Balm and Mahalo Care's Indigo Balm which sparked a new obsession with trying out different balms.

Don't understimate this little tub of magic, because AO recently shared 25 uses (yes, 25!) for this hardworking product. I put it to the test by using it as a makeup remover, and to my amazement it took everything off my face after double cleansing, and the nourishing formula also left my face nicely plumped and glowing. Given that this also performs as an all-over moisturizer for your face and body, a spot treatment, a make-up primer and even help soothe bug bites, I think this truly is the ultimate green beauty travel companion!
Ingredients: Cocos Nucifera (Virgin Coconut) Oil*, Glycine Soja (Sweet Soy) Seed Oil*, Cera Alba (Beeswax)*, Simmondsia Chinesis (Jojoba) Seed Oil*, Jojoba Esters, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Wax, Mangifera Indica (Mango) Seed Butter*, Salvia Hispanica (Chia) Seed Extract (and) Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract*,  Avena Sativa (Oat Kernel Oil), Limnanthes Alba (Meadowfoam) Seed Oil, Tocopherol and Vanilla Planifolia Fruit Extract*
Art of Organics subscription box ($38.00)
Overall, I was very pleased with the value of the box, given that the Suntegrity sunscreen and OLO balm are both standout products that add up to $64.00 (and the total retail value is $88.95 with everything else included) and will definitely be following me on my trip to Asia in two weeks. I have yet to be disappointed with anything curated by Claire and am already eagerly awaiting for next month's box!

P/S: This box has unfortunately sold out, so if you sign up now you will be receiving April's box as your first!

  1. I signed up for this subscription that started with May (Lumiere). I was very excited to receive my first Vapor Organic product but the rest of the products didn't wow me compared to past boxes. I know you can't please everyone so I'm hoping June will be more of my style. I wish I could have received the March box. I have wanted to receive the Suntegrity sunscreen primer/face lotion and the OLO skin savior balm in one of my beauty boxes for awhile now.
