A Letter To My Younger Self

Dear 28 year-old me,

It’s your first birthday back in Singapore and you are sitting alone in your rental room watching old re-runs of Ally McBeal on your laptop and bawling your eyes out, but understand that it is okay to be sad and the tears are cathartic. It is in these moments of intense heartbreak and brokenness that you will be able to draw closer to a God who will never leave nor forsake you.

You may just have had your heart so completely broken by a man you thought you were going to marry, a man whom you had given some of the best years of your life to, but know that in a less than a year you will meet a most wonderful man who will end up being the person you would marry. This man is kind, consistent, respectful and loving, and he loves and worships the same God that you do and together you will build a Christ-centered marriage.

You are devastated because it feels like you have lost everything and have to start all over again, but it is true when they say that you don’t know that God is all you need until God is all you have. Trust in His wisdom. Know that He has a perfect plan for your life. He shut the doors in Australia because He knows you need to be back in Singapore to heal in the company of your family and friends.

Your time abroad has given you invaluable life experiences and taught you to grow up quickly. It will take time, but you will grow to love and appreciate the comfort and security of being back home. You may have to work more than one job for a year to pay off your postgrad loan, but soon you will be travelling the world again. You will enjoy and excel at your new job, and you will reconnect with old friends and make new ones. Your dignity will be restored, and He will turn your mourning into dancing.

Years from now you will have friends and acquaintances reach out to you in their time of need because they were inspired by how you overcame your circumstances and your once-painful experience will become a powerful testimony of God's grace and goodness in your life.

So take heart my dear- I can tell you with confidence that life in your 30s will be so much more amazing! You have dared to do what many people would only dream about, and it is far better to have tried and failed than never to have tried at all. I am so proud of you.

Love,
Your 33 year-old self
