Solohope: Fashion for Good
(And A Giveaway!)

One of my resolutions for 2016 is to become a more conscious consumer (especially in the realm of fashion), where possible knowing who and where my purchases come from. With that in mind, I hope to use this blog as a platform to highlight small companies that are doing big things in our world.

As I was looking through Instagram one day, I chanced upon SoloHope and was instantly drawn to their fun, vibrant designs that look like something out of a trendy magazine catalogue.

SoloHope is Spanglish for "Only Hope", and the idea for the non-profit evolved over multiple mission trips that founder Emilee Connell made to rural Honduras, as she came face-to-face with women in abject poverty who struggled to provide for their children and themselves.
Her vision? Rather than being reliant on handouts, to cultivate jobs that will instill in them a sense of pride, empowerment and confidence in being able to support their families.

Emilee had thought of making bracelets out of pine straw and thread, and she took her idea to a local woman named Dilcia who handcrafted baskets from the same materials. And so Dilcia became the first artisan partner for SoloHope, and she is credited both with making sketches on paper come to life and designing some of the new products.

Sensing God's lead to step out in faith and grow the business, Emilee quit her full-time job and hired another two artisans, Maribel and Karina. Within a year, they had launched their first collection with unique and quality hand-crafted jewelry and homeware. They have since expanded to 13 ladies and 2 additional co-ops, launching 3 new collections every year.

As SoloHope pioneers and leaders, Dilcia and Maribel are entrusted with hiring and training new artisans. They teach them how to create existing products and continuously work on improving product quality to meet customer expectations. Emilee and her team in turn educate the ladies on finances, healthcare and education, and the entire SoloHope family spends time listening to each other's needs and praying together.
The artisans behind SoloHope are the heroes behind the brand, because as I read their testimonies on the website, I am amazed by their tenacity and resilience. The genuine smiles on their faces tell a story of redemption. These are women who have undergone tremendous hardship, but they continue to have hope in a better future. That hope is reflected in every weave in every piece, and with every purchase you are affording them the dignity of working towards the lives they envision for themselves.

It's hard to pick a favorite from their wide selection, but I personally love a good statement necklace that will immediately enhance any outfit. I think their fashion accessories will work as well as good accentuating a winter sweater as they would a light summery blouse. You may also want to check their beautiful hand-loom woven scarves that will keep you warm and looking stylish. Their prices range from $9.00 for a Valentine bracelet to $125.00 for the intricate De Sol bowl and shipping is at a flat rate of $6.00.

I've been wearing my SoloHope Eyelet necklace in Wild Rose (which sadly is no longer available on their website, but you can still purchase it here or here), and I have been getting plenty of compliments for it! The best part is being then able to share the story behind the product.
I was also excited to hear from Emilee that she will soon be travelling to India to explore the possibilities of expanding their mission to a new city. She will be in Mumbai to learn about the life of women living in slums and see if SoloHope's model will be a good fit for them. What a tremendous opportunity!

  1. I absolutely adore colourful and unusual accessories, and SoloHope looks right up my alley. Even better is the fact that it is supporting makers and communities in less developed areas. It is impossible for me to choose my favourite piece, but I always tend to gravitate towards neutrals or shades of blue!
