My Om Aroma Experience

Angela Jia Kim is a former concert pianist and founder of eco-luxe skincare line Om Aroma & Co. who calls herself an accidental entrepreneur, but I think the moniker modern superwoman suits her better.

On top of playing wife and mother, she also runs the eco-chic boutique spa Savor Spa in both the West Village and Woodstock, NY, as well as female-empowerment organization Savor the Sucess and beauty-to-business magazine Savor Life.

The impetus for Om Aroma was her allergic reaction to a chemical-laden body lotion and the cancer diagnosis of two family members, which led to her resolve to create an organic skincare line using only the purest ingredients. What started as an expensive hobby eventually grew into a serious business, and Angela retired from touring and partnered with a team of holistic formulators, aromatherapists and skin care experts to create her  own product line.

What I appreciate about Om Aroma is not just that their products are all made fresh daily and produced locally in the Catskills of New York, but more importantly that they are committed through their Dollar and Scents program to mentor women who are transitioning back into the workforce after having taken time to raise their children. Every dollar you spend enables Om Aroma to hire more women and grant them a second chance at a career.

When they approached me to review their award-winning
Manuka Honey Masque and newly-launched Mini Beauty Serum Trio, I immediately jumped at the chance (because why would anyone not?!).
Manuka Honey Masque ($64.00 for 2 oz.)
If you have read my other green beauty reviews, you would know that I am a big advocate for the use of honey in skincare, given its potent healing and detox abilities. However, not all honey are made equal, and in Om Aroma's case, they have chosen UMF manuka honey. The distinguishing factor in manuka honey is the high concentration of methylglyoxal, a compound believed to give the honey its antibacterial power, and the UMF rating reflects the purity and potency of the honey.
While the manuka honey draws out the impurities, the papaya and apricot enzymes in the formula gently digests dull skin cells and regenerates and brightens your complexion. The product has the same viscosity as raw honey, and although it appears thick and gooey in the bottle, it thins and spreads easily once you apply it onto your face. A quarter-sized amount is enough, but I prefer more when it comes to honey. Compared to my other honey masks, Om Aroma's has a stronger floral scent which adds a layer of aromatherapy to the treatment, giving a nice sense of calm when the product is on your face.
The suggested length of time to have the masque on is 5-10 minutes, but because my skin is greedy for honey, I leave it for a good 20-30 minutes before washing it off. The after-effect is nothing short of magical, leaving my skin feeling nourished and hydrated and imparting a lovely glow on my face. If this was a never-ending pot of product I would happily apply it on every night!

Mini Beauty Serum Trio ($45.00 for a set of 3)

If you are constantly on-the-go like I am, the mini beauty serum trio is for you (although there is also the option to purchase them separately). The set contains petite ampoules of all their serums, enough for at least 1-2 weeks of usage, and it is a great size for travel and allows you to sample the products before deciding which one to get in the full-sized.

My favorite in the trio is definitely the subtly-sweet Pumpkin Seed Renew Serum ($64.00 for 1 oz.), which also happens to be their best-selling product. The serum comes in a base of Rosehip Seed Oil, which is lightweight and non-greasy and effective at reducing dark spots and repairing and restoring the skin. The antixoidant-rich Pumpkin Seed oil is rich in vitamin A and E, zinc, omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, and helps reduce wrinkles and fine lines. Used after the Manuka Honey Masque, my face is beautiful and velvetly-soft the next morning!

Ingredients: Rosa Canina (Rosehip) Fruit Oil*, Cucurbita Pepo (Pumpkin) Seed Oil*, Limnanthes Alba (Meadowfoam) Seed Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil*, Extracts of Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender)*, Daucus Carota Sativa (Carrot) Root*, Lonicera Japonica (Honeysuckle) Flower*, Symphytum Officinale (Comfrey) Leaf*, Foeniculum Vulgar (Fennel) fruit* and Fragrance (100% Essential Oils)
*Certified Organic

Next on the list is the Carrot Rose Glow Serum ($74.00 for 1 oz), which has the intoxicatingly scent of roses. The base for this serum is Carrot Seed Oil, a highly-prized oil extracted from the dried seeds of the wild carrot plant, and the high levels of Vitamin A encourages the turnover of skin cells.  What stood out for me was the light scent of roses, which I found intoxicating. I use this in the morning right after cleansing and find it both to be hydrating and clarifying and a good base for my make-up.

Ingredients: Daucus Carota Sativa (Carrot) Seed Oil, Limnanthes Alba (Meadowfoam) Seed Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil*. Extracts of Daucus Carota Sativa (Carrot) Root*, Lonicera Japonica (Honeysuckle) Flower*, Symphytum Officinale (Comfrey) Leaf* and Fragrance (100% Essential Oils)
*Certified Organic

The final serum in the set is the Raspberry Protect Serum ($64.00 for 1 oz), aimed at fighting wrinkles and providing deep hydration for your skin. The base of Red Raspberry Seed Oil has a natural sunscreen effect equivalent to SPF 28-50 (although I won't ever recommend that you skip your sunscreen!) and also an abundance of fatty acids that will give your skin a natural radiance. To be honest it is hard for me to comment on the efficacy of this serum because I don't have any fine lines to speak of and I still prefer my tinted sunscreen product, but you can read for yourself the rave reviews on the website.

Ingredients: Rubus Ideaus (Red Raspberry) Seed Oil*, Extracts of Centaurea Cyanus (Cornflower) Flower*, Urtica Dioica (Nettle)*, Carica Papaya (Papaya) Fruit*, Salvia Officinalis (Sage) Leaf*, Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Fruit*, Symphytum Officinale (Comfrey) Leaf*, Foeniculum Vulgar (Fennel) Fruit*, Lonicera Japonica (Honeysuckle) Flower* and Fragrance (100% essential oils)
*Certified Organic

While the products I have reviewed in this post are made of familiar food ingredients like honey, pumpkin, carrot and raspberry, there are also cleansers and creams with fancy ingredients like champagne, pearl, truffles and caviar for those who prefer an elevated luxury in your skincare routine. I, for one, would love to try the Truffle Face Cream and Caviar Eye Cream in future!

Have you tried anything from Om Aroma. & Co? If not, what product would you like to try the most?
